The Neighborhoods of San Francisco - Haight & Ashbury
Haight-Ashbury is a district of San Francisco, near Golden Gate Park. Named for the intersection of Haight and Ashbury streets, called by many"The Haight". It rose to infamy as the counter-culture center of the 1960's hippie scene. Today, it is still somewhat offbeat, but real estate values are causing the gentrification of this neighborhood.
Nevertheless, some cool shops, interesting locals and dive bars still give this neighborhood character. You will also find The GAP, juxtaposed against vintage-clothing shops, second-hand stores and hip restaurants.
The Grateful Dead house can be seen at 710 Ashbury. The band lived here during the mid 1960's.
