Taking a Boat Tour of the San Francisco BayThere are a variety of ways to venture onto the waters of the bay. You could take one of many offered tours, you could rent or charter a boat or for a slightly less expensive option, you could simply take one of the transbay ferries. At least two companies offer tours of the bay. Tours last about 60 minutes and most will take you under the Golden Gate Bridge. We recommend taking a midday tour to avoid the fog. Sunset cruises are available too, but again, there is a risk of fog. Rates run about $15 to $20 for adults. Another option is to rent a sail boat or motor boat and take yourself on a tour of the bay. However, don't plan on going for a swim, the water temperature is cold and there are sharks (this is what kept prisoners from swimming off from Alcatraz). Charters are available for anything from small fishing boats to a large luxury yacht. You can even get something with staterooms and sleep on board. Why stay in a hotel when you tell your friends that you stayed aboard a yacht in the San Francisco Bay? However, if you don't need a tour guide or you are planning on visiting Sausalito or another ferry destinations, you could take the ferry. For about $14 round trip you can travel from Fisherman's Wharf to Sausalito. |
