Taxicab Service in the San Francisco Bay Area
Taxis can be hailed on the street in downtown areas although it may be easier to call for one in advance. Outside of the downtown areas and airports, calling for a cab will be necessary. Taxi fares are metered. Airporter vans and limousine services are typically fixed rate for a destination or time period.
Estimated taxi fares:
- SFO airport to downtown San Francisco, about $30-$45
- SJC airport to downtown San Jose, about $20
- SJC airport to downtown San Francisco about $120
- OAK airport to downtown Oakland, about $20
- OAK airport to downtown San Francisco about $30
San Francisco based taxi fares:
First 1/6th mile or flag drop $2.50
Each additional 1/5th mile .40
Each minute of waiting, or traffic time delay .40
Airport Exit Surcharge $2.00
Destinations 15 miles beyond
SFO or San Francisco are charged at 150% of the metered fare. See below for more details.
San Jose based taxi fares:
First 1/10th mile or flag drop $2.00
Each additional 1/10th mile

Out-of-Town Trips:
For out of town trips exceeding fifteen (15) miles beyond city limits, the fare will be one hundred and fifty percent (150%) of the metered rate; for trips exceeding fifteen (15) miles from San Francisco International Airport and not terminating within the city limits of San Francisco, the fare will be one hundred and fifty percent (150%) of the metered rate except for those trips from San Francisco International Airport traversing through San Francisco going to Marin County or to the East Bay the fifteen (15) mile limit will apply from the city limits of San Francisco as set forth above.
